Do you have any dietary restrictions? The dining hall can accommodate gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets, and all cooks are certified through AllerTrain for managing allergens and gluten in a cafeteria setting. They do need to know about any preferences or restrictions in advance so they can be prepared. If you have any dietary preferences or restrictions, please send them to me no later than June 15. If you have any specific questions please send them to me at least a week before that deadline, so we can consult.
If you are planning to perform at the ceilidh, do you require any specific equipment or space? Right now, we are planning to have a microphone and a keyboard, and the chairs in the room can be moved around.
Our venue for the weekend is United World College in Las Vegas, NM, which is a residential high school during the school year. They have a closed campus, which is why we require anyone attending any part of the weekend to register in advance. You can find directions to campus on the UWC website here, which are valid coming from the south (Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Los Alamos, etc), or from the north (Colorado) via I-25. There is no public transportation available. If you are interested in carpooling, you canpost in our facebook eventor talk to your local dance group. When you arrive on campus you will come to the welcome center on your left (and see the gated drive up to the castle on the right). Park by the welcome center and introduce yourselves to the security person, who will confirm that your names are on their list and let you through the gate. The welcome center is open 24/7, and we will ensure the security people have cell phone numbers for several of us organizers in case of any confusion. Please note that anyone who has not registered in advance will not be allowed on campus; we cannot add names to the list after June 15. After you have checked in at the welcome center, please drive up to the castle and park in front to check in and unload. You will then be directed to the parking area for the weekend (we will have volunteers available to drive you back up to the castle if needed). You can see a campus map here. The dorms, ballroom, dining hall, and community room (for the ceilidh and afterparty) are all in Montezuma Castle. One pair of the Saturday morning workshops will be held in the dance studio, which is in the Lansing Field House. The welcome center is in the bottom right of the map. If you are planning to attend the musicians’ workshop on Sunday, that will be held at Oddfellows Hall in Santa Fe;see directions from UWC to Oddfellows here.
Please note that UWC is at high elevation: about 6,800 feet. If you have the time and are coming from closer to sea level, consider coming to New Mexico a day or two early to acclimate, and plan to take it easy your first day here!
Here are some suggested items to bring with you:
Water bottle: with the high elevation and dry climate, it’s easy to become dehydrated.
Layers of clothing, plus an umbrella or raincoat: the temperatures will likely be in the 80s during the day, dipping down to the 40s or 50s at night, and monsoon season may have started (meaning afternoon rain/thunderstorms).
Fan. The dorm rooms are not air conditioned; there are windows and since it cools off at night this is generally sufficient. There may be some fans available for people flying in.
Fancy dress (dress as you fancy) for the ball
If interested in visiting the (outdoor, primitive) hot springs on campus, a bathing suit and towel. More information about the hot springs will be available at check-in.
Bathrobe and slippers to wear to and from the bathroom.
Sheets, blankets, pillows, towels and soap are provided: please bring any other toiletries.
Toiletry bag to carry items to and from the shower
Any wine or beer (no hard liquor) you would like to drink: you will check this in when you arrive and a bartender will serve it to you during the Friday and Saturday night parties. Local dancers, please consider bringing something to share.
Snacks, if desired: each floor in the dorms has a community room with a refrigerator, sink, and microwave.
